Follow The Path of Your True Calling

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

roberta-looking-to-sun.jpg

O ye gifted ones, follow the path of your true calling,
for however various your talents may be, ye can have
but one calling capable of leading ye to eminence and renown;
follow resolutely the one straight path before you,
it is that of your good angel.
Let neither obstacles nor temptations induce ye to leave it;
bound along if you can; or on hands and knees follow it.
Turn into other paths for a momentary advantage or
gratification and ye have sold your inhertance, your immortality.
Ye will never be heard of after death.

Best Buy/Napster/$5

You can’t analyze this through the prism of Best Buy’s bottom line, it’s doesn’t even pay to examine this as a Napster issue, what you’ve got to do is pull back and view this from a wide berth, encompassing music in general.  Because we’re on the verge of an incredible sea change, we’re just about at the TIPPING POINT!

Streaming is going to rule.  One day, sales of tracks will dive and streaming will be the way people listen to music.

It’s been ten years since the original Napster, verging on thirty years since the introduction of the CD, soon we’re going to have a generation that doesn’t think of music as something physical whatsoever.  It’s about delivery on demand.  I want to hear this cut, how do I do that?

That’s what’s driving MySpace, that’s what even driving video views.  People just want to hear the songs.  If you can hear everything you want whenever you want, why do you need to own it?

Napster is a good service, in some ways better than Rhapsody.  Albums are listed in order of release, how the listener thinks of them.  Inventory is frequently better than Real’s offering.  Then again, sometimes the reverse is true.  And in both cases, there are always missing tracks, absent because the labels believe this will incentivize customers to buy them.  Ain’t that a laugh.

I use both via my Sonos system.  As for availability outside the house?  Not a big issue.  You see I’ve ALREADY got more music than can fit on any of my iPods, I can NO LONGER take everything with me…  And I’m sick and tired of stealing music, it takes too much time when I’ve got whatever I want at my fingertips.

But Spotify is even better than Napster and Rhapsody.  Because you hear the music instantly, and if you back up, you don’t have to wait for the track to begin again.  And Spotify is working on an iPhone app.

Give kudos to Apple.  The iPhone is about crawling from the wreckage into a brand new car.  Rather than worry about selling iPods, they’re selling iPhones, and the iPod Touch.  Now it’s about apps more than music.  Which is good, because just like ringtones, sales of individual tracks are going to take a dive.  But people are still going to want to hear songs on the go.  But they’ll be listening to streams on their iPhones.  Which will have apps for all these services.  But don’t believe for a second that Apple won’t compete with them.

The interesting story is whether Apple can build a monopoly.  With the iPhone!  The Palm Pre is crippled upon launch, as a result of being tied to the dying Sprint.  Google Android has got the same problem as Windows Mobile, no uniformity.  That leaves the BlackBerry…  An amazing e-mail device, a shitty Web surfer.

Just like there’s one iTunes Store, will there be ONE APP STORE?

The iPhone will need to be available on all carriers, soon.  And wireless broadband performance has to improve in the U.S.  But if you can hear whatever you want whenever you want, why do you need to own it?

Napster’s got the advantage of Best Buy, it’s got a storefront to move the product, which Rhapsody does not, Real needs to be worried.  But how much of a dent can Napster make?  We’ve never been able to convince the masses to pay for subscription services.  They’re saddled with the word “rent”, which has a bad connotation and certainly aligns with “evaporate”.  But Spotify starts free, and then you UPSELL!

More music

Today’s announcement isn’t about the viability of Napster, the impact upon Best Buy, but the breaking of the dam.  The move from ownership to streaming (a much better term than “renting”).  No one can compete with Apple on ownership, Amazon has proven this, even though they’re almost giving away hit product.  When it comes to streaming will we have multiple services?  Or will you get it with your wireless subscription? And hear what you want online via Spotify.

Utterly fascinating.  I’m not sure how the rights holders generate the revenue of yore, but it’s great for listeners.  Everything available at your fingertips!

MySpace inured listeners to streaming.  YouTube seconded the effort.  How many clips consist of just the song?  While rights holders were debating the future, it was already happening.  Mind-sets have changed.  Ownership is HISTORY!

Buddha told a parable in a sutra

A man traveling across a field encountered a
tiger.  He fled,  the tiger after him.  Coming to a
precipice, he caught hold of the root of a wild
vine and swung himself down over the edge.  The
tiger sniffed at him from above.  Trembling, the
man looked down to where, far below, another
tiger was waiting to eat him.  Only the vine
sustained him.
Two mice, one white and one black, little by
little started to gnaw away the vine.  The man saw
a luscious strawberry near him.  Grasping the
vine with one hand, he plucked the strawberry
with the other.
How sweet it tasted!

Government funds music rehearsals

The Beatles

The Beatles played in Knotty Ash during their rise to fame

Budding British bands are being offered the chance to pursue their musical dreams in new rehearsal spaces opened by the government.

The first has been unveiled in Knotty Ash Youth Centre in Liverpool, where The Beatles played in 1962.

Others will follow in Bristol, Norfolk, Hastings, St Austell in Cornwall and Washington in Tyne and Wear.

Culture Secretary Andy Burnham said they were located in deprived areas that had few other youth facilities.

“These fully-equipped spaces will make a big difference for young people who are looking for somewhere to practise, spend time and find an outlet for their creative skills,” he said.

‘Valuable skills’

The scheme is being co-ordinated by former Undertones singer Feargal Sharkey, who is now head of music industry body UK Music.

“The benefits stack up socially, economically and culturally - and hopefully some of those young people will pick up valuable skills and go on to work in one of our fantastic creative industries,” he said.

“The Knotty Ash facility will plug directly into Liverpool’s thriving music scene and local music business - encouraging creativity, bringing the community together and benefiting a new generation of musicians.”

A total of 10 new rehearsal spaces are due to open by the end of the year using £500,000 of government money. Locations are also being sought in Manchester, Nottingham and Leicester.

Ontario Proposes New Law For Online Ticket Sales

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Category: Music

The Ontario government took aim yesterday at U.S. entertainment giant Ticketmaster by introducing a new law that would block companies from charging scalpers’ prices for tickets to concerts and sporting events on resale websites they own.

The proposed legislation follows an uproar over Ticketmaster’s relationship with a subsidiary ticket resale website, TicketsNow.com, that allows people to sell tickets above face value. A class-action lawsuit filed in February alleges that Ticketmaster diverts tickets to TicketsNow to sell them for a higher price.

Attorney-General Chris Bentley said yesterday that he has heard “loud and clear” from consumers in Ontario that they are not getting fair access to tickets for their favourite events. What the legislation would do, he said, is make it illegal for primary and secondary ticket sellers owned by the same corporate entity to sell tickets to the same events at higher prices.

“It’s the foundation for fairness,” Bentley said at a news conference.

“There’s a perception out there that if you benefit from both sides of the equation there’s not only a perception but a real concern about fair access to tickets.”

Individuals could be fined up to $5,000, companies up to $50,000 for breaking the proposed rules.

Ticketmaster could not be reached for comment.

But the proposed legislation would do nothing to stop brokers and agents corporately unrelated to Ticketmaster from reselling tickets at inflated prices on TicketsNow. Officials at Ticketmaster have said TicketsNow is open to anyone reselling tickets. They have also said TicketsNow is being singled out for the widespread practice of reselling tickets above face value.

New Democrat MPP Peter Kormos said the legislation does not go far enough. Ontario already has anti-scalping laws on the books, but these are rarely enforced, he said.

What the government should do, he said, is put a cap on the fee resellers charge, say at 6 per cent of the face value of a ticket. “The legislation will do nothing to protect consumers from being ripped off by corporate scalpers,” he said.

Artists from Bruce Springsteen to Charley Pride have lashed out at TicketsNow and other online resale sites for charging fans inflated prices for concert tickets.

Bob Runciman, interim leader of the Progressive Conservatives, said his party will likely support the legislation but said it’s unfortunate that Premier Dalton McGuinty and his government appeared to be in the dark on this matter.

“It had to be left to Bruce Springsteen to bring this to his attention,” he said.

Bentley said he drafted new legislation after officials at Ticketmaster declined his request to follow practices already in place in Alberta and Manitoba that bar the company from benefiting in the resale of tickets.

“They would not take that approach in Ontario,” he said.

The last time Bentley bought concert tickets was for a Britney Spears concert. But he quickly pointed out they were for his daughters, now 22 and 24, and that he did not attend.
